A Man & His Guitar

Posted by: | Comments (1)

I started looking around Freelance Folder a few months back, and thought I would try my hand at writing.  I submitted an article and actually got one published.

Keeping the Creative Juices Flowing – Following the links through out Freelance Folder, I ran into the Heavy Act that the founder –  Jon Phillips plays guitar for.  I am not real versed in Heavy Metal Rock, but this is a band to be on the look out for if you are.

I was intrigued to say the least at the photo’s of the band members, there is something that is just bad ass about them, they emanate what the rock scene is all about, bringing out and showing the core of the musician’s.

I wrote to Jon and asked if it was alright to sketch this particular picture of him and his PRS-Paul Reed Smith Guitar, he was more than happy to send me the original photo so that I could get to work. There was just something about this particular picture…

I incorporated the Gods of Now logo around Jon to give it more attitude.  The PRS Guitar was done in black charcoal to stand out a little bit more on Jon’s shoulder.

This project really was fun to see come to life, it continues to fascinate me how much we can find through the internet and how much talent is out there that we are completely unaware of.

Again, I say, it’s like taking a road trip from your cushy office chair..

Add some Practical Magic to your life

Posted by: | Comments (3)

Sandra Bullock has played in many movies and been on many magazine covers, all and out one of my favorite ladies of my generation.   She’s tough, sexy, sweet and has a “essence” about her.

From Demolition Man to A Time to Kill she came into our lives full force with that witty smile, and simple shyness. Where she fiddles with the cuffs of her long sweaters…and the classic lines out of Demolition Man -as Lenina Huxley

Lenina Huxley: Looks like there’s a new shepherd in town.
[Spartan gives her an exasperated look]
John Spartan: That’s sheriff.

Lenina Huxley: Chief, you can take this job, and you can shovel it.
John Spartan: Take this job… and shovel it.
Lenina Huxley: Yeah?
John Spartan: Close enough.

Lenina Huxley: I have, in fact, perused some newsreels in the Schwarzenegger Library, and the time that you took that car…
JohnSpartan: Hold it. The Schwarzenegger Library?
Lenina Huxley: Yes. The Schwarzenegger Presidential Library. Wasn’t he an actor when you…?
JohnSpartan: Stop! He was President?
Lenina Huxley: Yes! Even though he was not born in this country, his popularity at the time caused the 61st Amendment which states…
JohnSpartan: I don’t wanna know. President…

Practical Magic is one of my favorites, and this movie will always hold a special place in my heart for the bonds that it brought into my life with two other very special woman – I can’t be put into words what they mean to me, nor will I try.

Practical Magic is about Magic, Spirits, Sisterhood and bonds.  Several years ago, one of those very special woman showed up on my doorstep, on the evening that I lost my best friend…. needless to say, there was a little turmoil between the friend I had lost, and the friend on my doorstep.. reaching out to me in a time of need, here stood on my doorstep, the last person I expected to see.. given the volatility of the relationship between the two of them…

The two special women above are Mother & Daughter … and one is fighting breast cancer – Practical Magic somehow became our safe haven of laughter.. I said.. some one showed up on my doorstep…and now, if we need a laugh.. a classic line out of the movie Practical Magic is in regards to the tequila bottle.. a potion – belladonna laced tequila bottle, that ….. “someone left it on the porch”

There is a point in the movie..where sisters are lying on the floor facing each other, one in dire trouble.. the other encouraging her to push on…  there have been many late evening text messages with heads on the pillow, tears in the eyes, and messages sent of encouragement throughout the years, months & days.  Amas Veritas = True Love, from the movie and fitting for all parts of our lives..

Love those around you, truly.. listen to those around you, encourage those around you, be apart of those around you, for we never know how long they have been lent to us.

Another famous Sandra Bullock line… “you…wanna…kiss me!” Go Kiss someone you love.. for no reason!

A Star is Born – Judy Garland

Posted by: | Comments (2)

A 45 year career, and a life of 47 years….and versatility was Judy Garland.  Acting on stage in musicals & drama’s as well as being a recording artist with what is called a contralto voice, she won many awards for her accomplishments.

Being self conscious about her appearance, Judy Garland struggled, some executives even told her that she was unattractive and overweight.  I wonder what they looked like?

As young as 12 years old, the talent and the voice was astounding, a young girl dreaming of Clarke Gable and has this to say….. You Made Me Love You

I looked through several pictures of Judy Garland, watched a few video’s and enjoyed walking down memory lane.  I can visualize my mother at this time.  There seemed to be an air about woman, different than it is now and I can’t quite explain it.  I guess it was because not everything was just put out there as it is now a days.  There was still “things” left to the imagination.

A Star is Born – I think of Barbara Striesand and Kris Kristofferson and the final scene, but long before that, there was Judy Garland as Norman’s Wife.. with the heartbreaking ending.

Enjoying those that we know little about is really what I got out of this post, finding out information about someone who passed long before I was born.  I am looking forward to talking with my mom about Judy Garland and getting the  mental pictures from her – from a time long passed..

Sliding into the Weekend – Bonnie Raitt

Posted by: | Comments (1)

The Best of Bonnie Raitt shows off some of this musician’s phenomenal bottleneck style guitar playing.  With a birthday just around the corner, you’d never think she was close to 60, she’s got a vibrancy about her that comes out in her music.

Music was part of Bonnie’s life from early on and reviews of her work have been a mixed bag through out the years.  Struggling with substance abuse as many before her, she credited Stevie Ray Vaughan the evening after he died tragically, in helping sober herself up.

It took close to 20 years of recordings and labels before this musician was to find commercial success.  On her 10th album Nick of Time.  That is determination.

Bottleneck style guitar playing is one of my favorite sounds, some of the great blue’s players used bottles, aspirin bottles, Excedrin bottles – you name it.  That was, when those type of materials came in glass.  Now, they are made special, coming in different sizes and materials.

Here is my Friday Line Up of Slide Players that I will make sure I listen to today! If you haven’t heard of them, check out some of my favorites.

Sophia Loren & Self Discovery

Posted by: | Comments (1)

After all these years, I am still involved in the process of self-discovery. It’s better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life. Sophia Loren

Self discovery can be found in those lonely hours in the middle of the night when something startles you awake, an emotion, an action or something that has occurred in your life that you don’t understand.

This moment of self discovery, is a growing process, and seems to be something we can not escape.  How do we handle these moments in our life when something continues to eat at us?

I am trying to come to the realization that when we try and figure out the actions of those around us, we loose our own self-discovery and our growth comes to a stand still.

I had a dream last night, involving a man.. NOT what you think.. a man that was threatened by my knowledge and kindness.  A man that stunted my growth for too long, so how and why did I give him the power to enter into my sub-conscious mind and wake me in the middle of the night, so that I could stew on all the negativity he brought into my life?

I’ve long since moved past this experience in my waking world, but somewhere at my core, his negativity still lives. I have to wonder when we run into people that are mountains of negativity, what do they dream about, what haunts them? Do they wake in the middle of the night fighting with what is at their core?  Are they learning & growing from being negative to those around them? When will their moment of self discovery happen, can anything we do change them?

I don’t have the answers, and the best approach I have found is one that I learned from John Edward in his  Crossing Over cd set where you must visualize yourself surrounded by mirrors that are reflecting out, and you are protected, the mirrors will reflect back the negativity of the person that is standing in front of you.  It’s funny to see how uncomfortable and fidgety these type of people get when you work on this exercise.

I’ve never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don’t understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now. Sophia Loren.

Move Over Monday – Janis Joplin

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Could there have been a more outrageous woman personality that spoke the 70’s as soon as she hit the first note in a song?

You say that it’s over baby, Lord,
You say that it’s over now,
But still you hang around me, come on,
Won’t you move over.

It was a time for poet’s and her and Jim Morrison set the tone for scenes upon scenes for the psychedelic rock movement, their raunchy and rebellious behavior was one that the teen scene flocked to.  Imagine the fantasy of The Poet in Exile, our fantasies of rock legends, alive, on an island.. another well worth the read.

No matter what lyrics Janis sang she bent the throttle on them, reaching into the gravely under tones and the seedier side of life, we lived vicariously through her as we traveled down that Highway with her & Bobby McGee.

Not only did the song take us on a journey across the country, but Joplins short career gave us some all time greats.  Her last recording was Mercedes Benz an astounding throaty sound that Janis was known for.  There was a song written for Janis by Nick Gravenites, she was supposed to record the lyrics the evening she passed away, it appears on Buried Alive in the Blues (+ Bonus DVD)
It is well worth checking out, our imagination can run wild, thinking of how the Babe of Blues would have performed this song..

Hollywood’s a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss, and fifty cents for your soul. – Marilyn Monroe

One of THE sexiest woman ever, has been gone now over 46 years, and she is still idolized and fantasized about.  There have been many debates on what size dress Marilyn wore, and in all honesty to me, that is defamation of who she was..she was beautiful and talented and I heard that Groucho Marx had something quite intersting to say about her when men met her..

It’s stated across the internet she was either a size 12, 14 or 16, who the hell cares..and if she was any of those, at the common size of our celebrities that eat cotton balls soaked in orange juice to be the size 0’s and 1’s that they are

It would take 12 Calista’s, Courtneys or Jessica’s to make up one Marilyn.

Beaming in beauty, Marilyn’s eyes tell a sultry story… from her love affairs with Joe DiMaggio, JFK & Peter Lawford, she was a beauty that captured many in her time.  Ironically enough, even the young teens of today know her name, she captivated young guys & grown men back than, and now.. I wonder if there are any that will ever be able to fill her shoes..

Ladies Week or is it Man's Week?

Posted by: | Comments (4)

It’s Ladies Week or Man’s Week, depends how you look at it, I’ll be featuring some of the “ladies” this week in my pencil sketches…

I have focused on drawing many of my favorite guitarist, musicians and what not.  I figured it’s time to honor some requests, and if you have some, please feel free to let me know.

Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart – banned together as sisters are, they have been one of the only constants in Heart’s career,  but don’t sisters do that most of the time.

Heart rose to fame in the 1970’s when we were sporting bell bottoms, beads and bongs as we that grew up than played Hippie.  Oh.. gotta check out: Hippie Shop, if you like the psychedelic era of the 70’s, it’s a must to put on your shopping list.   I wonder how far Joe – from Crotchety Old Man Yells at Cars lives from there?

Sisters…it’s a powerful thing, it’s a band, it’s a club, it’s a loyalty…as the Lakota Sioux say… Mitakuye Oyasin – all my relations.  A must read Lakota Woman, talk about a powerful and strong woman.  My oldest sister was my ally growing up protecting me from my middle sister and brother.. they’d chase me with worms, put blankets over me and say and as my other sister, the middle one, with no middle name, really has the middle syndrome going on .and continue’s to argue with me about blogging..she started one, Do Something Even if its Wrong.  but still argue’s and isn’t quite getting the entire concept.. she has no trouble speaking up any other time!!!!

All three of us are entirely different, as you guessed by now, if you are a faithful reader, I am the “flower child” a whoops, I am told, but a good whoops.  Sisters have a unique bond between them, most of the time.  It’s sad when sisterhood breaks for reasons that are unexplainable, in my life though, no matter how much they make you want to pull your hair out, they are there during the times in your life when you need them.

Friends are sisters too, I have one in particular who is smart, sensative and I can’t even tell you how strong, October is Breast Awareness Month, and her story is here..I’ll let ya read that one on your own, I don’t want to smear one of the Wilson Girls eye makeup….

I am Woman, Hear me Roar!

Thanks to Carol at She-Lives for requesting these two sultry looking stars from the seventies!.

Bringing People Together

Posted by: | Comments (2)

I sit in amazement how the “information highway” brings people into our lives, I recently got an email from someone looking for of all things a picture of House of Texas Music – In Austin, Texas to add to a Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute Video of – I’m Crying.

Funny thing is, my husband wanted to take the picture outside of Ray’s Hennig’s store of the Marquee, and I wondered why, well, I suppose a greater power was at work and Stevie knew Connie had been searching for a picture of Ray’s place for quite some time.

Connie contacted me again for another project she is working on and she will be featuring some of my sketches.  She asked if I had any of Reese Wynans – I did not, so I whipped this up to send to her as well as some others.  Connie has some wonderful Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute Video’s and has given me some fantastic pictures that I have never seen of many of my favorite’s.

If you are a fan – these video’s are a must see, there’s several with interviews and pictures that she cherishes.  There is little information out there about Reese Wynans that I could find,  he added something to the already great Double Trouble, they were blazing and a strong threesome, and with Reese’s energetic and solid keyboard playing Double Trouble continued to thrive and create music that will be coursing through blue’s lover’s ears, minds & souls for years to come!.

How do you become associated to people’s work online in cyber space, the blogosphere or online marketing?

Through Social Networking by connecting with a variety of people and making friends through various networks.  But yet, the rules and regulations seem to change daily, or do not apply for the small & medium fish in the sea as they do for the whales.

On-Line social networking activity has come to the forefront in the last year, connecting people of similar interests as well as completely different niches, beliefs and opinions.

With the millions of blogs and websites that now grace our online world, can we possibly keep up with all the reading material that is at our fingertips from our friends in our networks? Sometimes we may over look a feed that comes through and miss something we really like.

Many social networking sites offer a way to “shout” out what you are doing, or give you a simple thumbs up button to pass along to your friends to let them know you are interested in a specific piece of online material.  Why is it now, with these functions being in place, that it’s the little guys that suffer, get banned and get booted from the system, to loose what they have worked so hard to acquire.  Enveloping their time in getting their reputations back?

It is people that drive the social networking sites, but who is it that deems they are not worthy to be able to submit what they feel is a good cause? If we have a good cause and want to get the word out, with the functions in place to be used, why are so many suffering from a ban of the material they feel is legit?

How can the small and medium fish get the word out there for someone to take notice, social networking was developed for this very purpose.  Who is rewarded on the social networking sites? Who get’s the notoriety? How do they get it?  Why is it that so many of the same people are the one’s that are always on the top and don’t get banned?

Many questions from a fairly new blogger….I am sure I am not alone.
